Abstract
It is obvious that many urban areas are predominantly covered by concerts and nature is becoming less accessible for the existing and the coming generation and most urban center of Ethiopia including Mekelle city, do not have well development practices that supports the green spaces. The objective of this study was to access the development practice and implementation challenges of green spaces in Mekelle city. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research approach and descriptive type of research with cross sectional time dimension. Both primary and secondary data were collected based on survey strategy through questionnaire, interview, group discussion and field observation. Whereas secondary data were collected from policies, strategies, researches, documents and reports. The collected data arranged, sorted, coded, edited, analyzed and interpreted. This study has shown that the green space development practice in Mekelle city is not implemented properly and its challenges for implementation is mainly due to, low level of public awareness and participation, less attention given for the green space development by the community and officials (government by itself),lack of skilled man power to implement the green spaces, inadequate financial capacity, poor coordination and integration among different stakeholders ,departments and sectors , previous master plan additionally lack of water resource as a whole in the city ,lack of political commitment and lack of strong enforcement to apply the plan and polices and strategies that was published as regional and national level. Due to those problems, green spaces in the city is poor in quality and quantities, since the city is capital city of the region (Tigray)the rate of population and urbanization increases from time to time resulted the conversion of several green spaces in to built up structure and excess distraction of green spaces. The existing green space in the city is below the minimum standard implies there are problems in respecting the proper land use planof the green space in the city.In general the respondents and the researcher observation indicates in the findings, there is a poor development practice of green space in the city, to mitigate the implementation challenges of green spaces, green spaces should not be considered as a secondary activities, solving the city water resource problem, strictly enforcement of rules is highly expected from the city government and there must be coordination and integration among institutional sectors, community participation, NGOs involvement and their contribution was enhancing public awareness of green space and ensuring their participation and collaborate green space development practices.
