Research is fundamental to discovering new knowledge. A key requirement for this endeavor, is having to write academically. With integral values in place there is governance over the authors actions, choices and content he creates in his work. This piece covers academic writing, academic integrity and the procedures Divine Word University follows due to the violation of academic policies. Discussed as well, is why the application of academic integrity, to the Divine Word University academic community, is necessary for the university’s reputation.
Foremost, what is academic writing, and what are the distinguishing factors that set it apart from other forms of literature? Academic writing has criteria that is crucial for its unique identity. It requires a structure such as that of an essay, containing a beginning, a middle and an end. Unlike other writings, the delivery of academic writing is an important aspect for a quality paper. Ideas are presented in a logical sequence with evidence based knowledge, opinions and arguments (Academic writing, n.d). Factors such as an informed audience are taken into consideration and it is delivered in an impersonal manner. Moreover, the use of proper grammar and punctuations play critical roles in the flow of ideas in the writing and prevent ambiguity in delivery.
Referencing is an essential, and is the defining element of academic writing. It is what sets it apart from other forms of literature. Referencing has two part parts, an in-text citation that acknowledges an author or source within the text, and a reference list that contains all the necessary details about the acknowledgements. These two constituents, enable readers to identify the original source of information presented in writings. Elements such as the author’s name, date of publication, title of article or book, page number, publisher, country in which the source was published, website links are used depending on where the information was retrieved from, whether it be a book, an article, journal, video or website. Acknowledgments of original publishers maintains respect and recognition of intellectual property.
An association is constructed between integrity and academia to form academic integrity. According to ……………. academic integrity is defined as having commitment to the five fundamental values which are honesty, respect, fairness, responsibility and trust, and even against the greatest adversities of time, resources and deadlines, an academic should have the courage to implement these principles. Communication of information and ideas generated should be done honestly and ethically, not from incidence but as a result of responsible actions and thoughts. Once more, appropriate acknowledgements are made in accordance with the standards of different academic communities. They ensure that students avoid violating academic policies and moreover, promotes attainment of scores and grades accordingly, as a result of their hard work and efforts.
Now that we have identified the fundamentals of academic integrity, let us analyze what they mean and how they are applied in Academia.
Of the five fundamental values, the most notable and arguably the first one that comes to mind is honesty.
Consequences vary according to the severity of academic misconduct whether in terms of research or student and staff academic misconduct. Different universities and intellectual communities have different procedures for disciplinary actions. Divine Word University, bases its policies and regulations entirely on the principles of academic integrity.
