As a popular saying goes by, smoking is dangerous for your health and the enviroment . But why does it seem that many people are still smoking?. In Medical News Today by Nordqvist (2015) “cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals. A significant number of them are toxic and can damage our cells; at least 50 of them are carcinogenic which cause cancer”(p.1). Due to the negative effects and disease it causes to the non-smokers and smokers including the harmful things and effects it does to the environment, smoking should be banned completely because there is no positive outcome of it.
Smoking not only harms the real smoker, but it harms non-smokers as well that perhaps could be around them, this is called second-hand smoking. Smoking in enclosed spaces or really anywhere is breathed in by everyone, exposing smokers and non-smokers alike to its harmful effects. In fact, children can be an example of a nonsmoker; over 40% of children have at least one smoking parent, which means children are getting exposed to the harmful effects of smoking from a young age, which could lead to negative consequences. Likewise, unborn children are affected by smoking as well. For instance, if a pregnant woman smokes or is exposed to secondhand smoke when they’re pregnant, they’re unborn baby is exposed to harmful chemicals, which results in more than 1,000 infant deaths annually, miscarriages, premature death, sudden infant syndrome or many more other things, which could be prevented if smoking was banned completely from the start. As told in CDC (2018)”more than 41,000 deaths result from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day because of smoking”(p.1). As stated before, smoking not only harms the one smoking but it also harms the people around them and even unborn children, thus having a negative effect and a reason smoking should be banned.
Additonally , smoking has ultimately led to an increased health concern even to the nonsmoker, as stated before. Smoking is incredibly harmful to the human body; it causes harm to our lung, heart, blood circulation, skin, mouth, bones, eyes, and fertility. In fact, smokers are more likely than non-smokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and plentiful other effects. As stated in CDC(2015)”Smoking can also cause cancer almost anywhere in your body. If nobody smoked, one of every three cancer deaths in the United States would not happen”(p.1). Smoking is very harming to one’s health. In the event that smoking was to be prohibited, none of this would be an issue, there would be a lot fewer deaths, people would be healthier, with fewer diseases.
In addition, not only does smoking harm smokers, second-hand smokers and their health, but it also greatly influences the surrounding atmosphere. Consequently, smoking causes air pollution and moreover also pollutes the land and water. According to Nation Swell by Chow”cigarette tips are the most commonly littered item in the U.S. and around the world — an estimated 4.5 trillion tips are tossed worldwide per year”(p.1). Every day, millions of cigarette butts are left on the ground. It’s litter that causes significant environmental harm. The average cigarette butt contains numerous chemicals which may be considered health hazards; littered cigarette butts leak toxic chemicals into the environment and can contaminate water. The toxic exposure can poison fish, as well as animals who eat cigarettes. In short, not only do cigarette butts pollute our land, but they also harm wildlife, thus another example on how smoking is negative in many ways and should be prohibited.
Smoking should be banned however there are still plenty of people who believe smoking is fine and is not as much harm as it really is. For example, some people may contend that smoking actually has numerous benefits such as smoking takes away stress, its cool,it lowers risk of obesity as well as lower risk of knee replacement surgery as told in Science Daily by Blackwell (2011) “study revealed that men who smoke had less risk of undergoing total joint replacement surgery than those who never smoked”(p.1) . Despite the evidence on how smoking could be good the neggetive effects still out weigt the positive affects that are claimed to be caused by smoking.
