Paragraph Synopsis of Books 9, 10, and 11 of the Odyssey
In Book Nine, Odysseus and his men sail to the land of the Cyclopes. After they eat some goats that they find on the Island, Odysseus take some of his men to explore the island. They find some more goats and other animals like lambs but before they can snatch them, the Cyclops returns. Odysseus tries to be nice but the Cyclops slaughters two of his men. The Cyclops keeps Odysseus and the rest of his men as prisoners. Odysseus wants to kill him but then he realizes that if he killed him, they would be trapped forever. Odysseus and his men come up with the plan to get the Cyclops drunk. When the Cyclopes comes back, they do this. Then, Odysseus tells the Cyclops that his name in “Noman”. Then one of his men stabs him in the eye and when the Cyclopes calls out for help he says that “Noman” is harming him. The other Cyclopes disregard him and Odysseus and his men are able to escape while riding underneath animals. When they get to their ship and are sailing away, Odysseus calls out to the Cyclopes to rub it in and the Cyclops curse Odysseus and his men so that they will never reach home.
In Book Ten, the Achaeans have left the Cyclops island and arrive at a new island called Aeolia. When they are there, they meet a guy named Aeolus. They have a great time there and when they leave, Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of wind. Odysseus men let the wind go because they think that it is Gold and Silver. The wind brings them back to Aeolia where Aeolus refuses to give them more wind because he assumes that the Gods hate them and wish for them to fail. They eventually arrive at Laestrygonians where Odysseus’ scouts get eaten and killed. They leave fast and only Odysseus’ ship survives. They sail for awhile and end up on Aeaea where the Goddess Circe lives. She turns half of Odysseus’ men into pigs and Hermes gives Odysseus a drug that will help him overcome her power. He makes Circe turn his men back and they live with Circe for awhile until they decide they want to leave. Circe tells them that they must go to Hades to speak with a prophet. The next morning Odysseus finds out that one of his men had died by falling off the roof and breaking his neck.
In Book Eleven, Odysseus travels to the Underworld and Does what Circe told him to do. Souls from the dead appear and the first one is Elpenor. He is the guy who broke his neck and died in the last book. Next, Odysseus talks to Tiresias who lets Odysseus know that he will one day reach home to his wife and get rid of the suitors. The last thing he tells Odysseus is to not touch the flocks of the Sun or he won’t return home and will lose his crew. Odysseus calls some other people to him like his mom and famous heros. Lastly, Odysseus sees some other people from the previous books. He watches them getting tortured. When they try to ask Odysseus about their family, he runs back to his ship and leaves.
