Competency statement

Competency statement: To support social and emotional development and to provide positive guidance. The skills learned through positive social and emotional development are the foundation for lifelong learning. By providing a safe and enriched environment and leading by example I am helping to lay that foundation.
CS-III-a:
Describe some of the ways you support the development of children’s positive self-concepts and growing social/emotional skills. I support the development of children’s positive self-concepts and growing social/emotional skills by nurturing positive relationships, guiding them towards a positive self-concept, and giving children opportunities to express themselves. We draw self-portraits using mirrors, talk them through conflict, and encourage positivity with friends.
CS-III-b: The philosophy I have varies greatly from how I was taught as a child. Rules were rules. Break them and you were punished. I remember how that made me feel. I do not want the children in my class to feel that way, nor my own children at home
The challenging behaviors of young children can certainly be frustrating, but letting your frustration get the best of you only makes situations worse. My approach to these behaviors is to remain calm, be firm and friendly. I tend to distract through conversation and ask questions that pique a child’s interest. I give the child an opportunity to be heard. Lots of challenging behaviors can be dealt with if we listen. Others may need an outlet for their behavior.
