Making an adjustment coming from high school to college can be frightening. During college, most of your habit is most likely to change. This includes any study habits you’ve developed, most of your friends have a different way of adapting than you do, and the activities you portray in. A major concept that changes drastically is how one decides to eat and the amount of exercise one decides to participate in. The freshman 15, is a risk that most people believe is fake. Gaining an extra 15 pounds can reduce your good health intake while becoming a threat for most of the first year. The freshman 15 means that freshman gain relatively around 15 pounds during their first years of college. This usually happens when one decides to take in their intake of unhealthy food and how they carry themselves by exercising. Modifying new diets and gaining more exercise are the main solutions to avoiding your freshman 15.
A cause of gaining the freshman 15 is how you decide to transform your diet from high school leading towards college. In a study directed by Jung, they explain “The transition to university can disrupt established eating and physical activity patterns among young women. Although the assumption that an increased intake of calories leads to the Freshman 15 weight gain is intuitively appealing” (Jung). This shows that most freshmen do find a disturbance in their eating habits and physical activity intake. The effects are the increase of weight and having the thought process of having a relatively small self-image of yourself. As a result, to eating unhealthily and developing this trait throughout college, it can affect you in a long-term sequence, such as obesity. Arouchon explains, “females are more likely to gain weight, be less physically active, and considering their diets to be only somewhat healthy or only slightly healthy” (Arouchon). This further goes on to describe how women become overweight and how it can lead to obesity. There is even the unhealthy choice of becoming anorexic and bulimic. The most relevant solution to the freshman 15 leads to becoming more aware. Becoming aware of what you eat, how much you sleep, and exercise is the most reliable solution for avoiding the freshman 15.
When moving from a high school or from a different city, most college freshmen need to settle down to their new surroundings. When moving to new surroundings, it can create stress for people because they haven’t fully adapted to their placement. Stressing can overwhelm people which can often cause eating unhealthy foods at an increased rate rather than healthy food. Hoffman explains, “. Students entering their first year of college are faced with many stresses and changes, including changes in eating and exercise behavior” (Hoffman). Adapting to college can be hard, for some freshman they can find themselves feeling miserable, leading to more stress and gaining weight. Another type of eating is called “emotional eating.” This is when you are in a sad or upsetting state of mind and find yourself eating more and more. In most cases, college freshman loses interest in staying in shape. This is because in college people are frequently busy with homework or studying, not all students have time to focus on not losing weight or staying in shape.
In college your options are limited. Colleges these days are serving unhealthy choices to students, causing them to make the choice of eating unhealthily. Kelly explains “College is also the first time many kids decide what, when, and how much to eat. One of the best predictors of weight gain was eating in the all-you-can-eat dining halls, which encourage a supersize-it mentality” (Kelly). College dining halls don’t realize the impact they have on students by what they eat and how they will portray themselves. Community colleges are at an advantage because most don’t have many options for a meal. Kelly then explains that “Colleges often use their dining systems as a selling point, and vending machines bring in big bucks. Which means students must learn there’s no free lunch” (Kelly). Most vending machines you see today are served with desserts and candies. Where are all the healthy food options?
A couple of negative significances of the freshman 15 is that based on most studies conclusions they only calculate the average weight gain between the students. According to authors Smith-Jackson, Reel, they suggest, “A health concern with this weight gain is the possibility of the women continuing to increase weight of this proportion throughout their college experience. Several studies have postulated this idea, stating that the students could become obese, gaining between 9.63 and 27 pounds” (Smith-Jackson, Reel). The research has evaluated that overtime women were susceptible to gaining their freshman 15. In this case, this study has the perk of not calculating by average and only calculating by 1 person.
After executing these solutions, the drive for weightless will transmute more as each day goes by. Belief that a superior self-image can be met and succeeded by owning up to your actions and attitudes. The reality of the freshman 15 will not occur within students. The problem doesn’t not affect only girls, it affects boys too. The problem of obtaining the freshman 15 relies on a conclusion that will best conquer it. By accomplishing the solutions aforementioned, students will gain interests for becoming active and waiting healthier foods.
