Well HPS is a disease that is a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease that is caused when humans come into contacts with rodents that carry hantaviruses( Hantaviruses are RNA viruses) . Anyone who comes into contact with a rodents that carry hantaviruses have a risk of getting HPS.

Late Stage Symptoms include: lung congestion, fluid accumulation in the lungs, and shortness of breath.
Early Stage Symptoms include: fatigue, fever, and muscle aches.

Hantavirus was first identified in an outbreak in 1993 in the Four Corners areas in the southwestern United States and found to be transferred by rodent urine, feces, saliva, and by air-born particles containing these items. The 2012 hantavirus outbreak at Yosemite National Park was do to hantavirus transfer to humans by deer mice. Human-to-human transmission of the hantavirus in America has not yet been documented, therefore (in America) the disease is not contagious.
