Technology has been in education since as early as the 1800s. From the Typewriter to the Smart Board technology seen in most schools today, technology is something that has been in education for decades. Some people would argue that technology has not benefited education, and has made students more distracted and careless, but it has helped education in many ways. Technology has made learning more efficient, made teaching more efficient, and allowed better communication between students and teachers.
In the early 1900s, most teachers were using a chalkboard to write notes down and present them to students. That was until the overhead projector was introduced. This piece of technology improved how teachers could present notes to a large group of students and only had one downside, teachers had to write down the notes. This took up most of the class time, but once the teacher wrote it, it could be used more than once. This allowed more class time to do work. In technology today, the overhead projector has evolved into a digital board that allows PowerPoints, word documents, and video lessons to be played and viewed from a large group of students. This allowed even more time to be saved in the classroom due to teachers not having to write or even talk during certain lessons. This part of technology is one of many things that have made learning and teaching more efficient. It has saved countless hours allowing students more time to engage in the classroom, allowed teachers to save time writing notes, and allowed teachers more time in the classroom to engage with students.
Communication inside and outside the classroom due to technology has also improved. Before internet, cell phones, and computers, teachers and students could only communicate inside the classroom or around their campus during school hours. Once that time was up, there was no other way to contact teachers for help on work or to ask what is due the next day. Students could contact their peers if they knew where they lived. If not, the student would be lost on what to do. This changed when landlines, computers, and cell phones became more accessible. If a student needed help on an assignment, they could contact their peers or teachers through a landline. On the internet, students could go into online chat rooms and talk with their peers or others around the world for help. When e-mail was introduced, students could get a teacher e-mail address and send them a message online and within minutes they would have a response. Cell phones became more advanced, therefor, students and teachers could talk on the phone, over text, or on an online forum from anywhere in the world. In recent years, this technology has reached a peak. The education system was more focused on how students and teachers could communicate through technology; therefor, class websites were made where teachers could post updates, deadlines, assignments, and have one localized place where teachers and students can talk and ask for help. This technology has broken the time constraint, location, and barrier of when, where, and how students and teachers could communicate. This has allowed for teachers and students from around the world to connect and communicate from anywhere in the world at any time of the day.
Some would argue that technology has not improved education. Some would say that it has caused students to be more distracted in the classroom, straying away from actual course work. Computers and tablets in schools have been programmed and set up in certain ways to disallow students to access inappropriate sites, download unauthorized programs and games, and have limited access to what students can do on the operating system. Another argument would be that students can cheat more often in the classroom, using cell phones to look up answers on the internet. Most schools have policies where students must register their device before they can bring it into the school and they must connect to their network where it disallows most internet websites, blocks certain programs from working, and disallows cell phone service to be used. Other prevention steps are students must keep their cell phones in lockers, cars, or with a teacher and students must turn in all cell phones before taking a test, quiz, or exam to prevent cheating. Some education buildings have signal blockers to block certain cell phone signals to work, therefor making unauthorized internet access a thing of the past. Some would also say that technology has caused a loss in teaching and learning time due to inexperience and access to technology. Most school districts and universities have implemented training programs for both students, teachers, and sometimes parents to help with how to use the internet, how to use word processing programs, and how to use this technology safely and securely. This reduces frustration and time loss in the classroom. Communities, schools, and universities also have libraries where a plethora of computers and tablets are ready to use and where internet access is free, making the access to technology available to all near a library, school, or university.
The benefit of technology in education has helped students and teachers all around the world. From the internet, cell phones, and computers. Technology has improved communication between students and teachers, allowing them to talk outside of school using class websites, text messages, and e-mails. It has made teaching more efficient in ways from the over head projector able to project notes to a large group of students, computers allowing students to use the internet to aid them with research and word processing, and cell phones allowing teachers and students to talk to each other from anywhere in the world at any time. Without technology in education, students and teachers from around the world would struggle to keep in communication with each other and struggle to be able to use time in the classroom to its full potential.
