This story is important because in the world a lot of individuals try to be what society expects them to be instead of being who they are meant to be. This story shows a lot about that for example, The main character Stephen tries to be what kind of man that his father wanted him to be instead of trying to find what kind of man he really wants to be. But at the end of the story, he finds what kind of man he wants to be even though his father disapproves of him trying to be something else that he does not want him to be. When the Polack(Leka) began to tremble and moan, Stephen hesitated for a long time before he reached out to wake him”(Nowlan,pg.5). This quotation shows Stephen growing up and realizing he does not have to be the person his father wants him to be but rather be the one Stephen wants himself to be. Stephen wakes his friend even after his father told him not to wake his friend up.
